BitPixel is a music generation application that integrates visual and auditory elements through algorithmic patterns. The software allows users to explore complex soundscapes by manipulating large, variable visual patterns that serve as the basis for sonification.

Interaction is straightforward; tapping the preview area initiates playback, with options to adjust the speed and interval of selected pixels, thereby producing distinct musical patterns. Additionally, the app supports multiple numeral systems, enabling the exploration of different musical scales beyond conventional tuning.

The underlying rules of BitPixel are rooted in mathematical numeral systems, spanning from base-4 to base-9, including quaternary, quinary, senary, heptary, octal, and ternary systems. Each digit within these systems is mapped to a corresponding number of real-time video pixels, translating visual data into complex numerical sequences that inform the generated notes.

This process results in an automatic music synthesis that produces intricate and evolving sound textures based on visual input. The approach exemplifies a fusion of visual algorithms and musical structure inspired by mathematical theory.

BitPixel received recognition as a notable application at the ZKM App Award in 2015.
